Behavioral health issues can develop when a child, for whatever reason, is struggling to cope with the usual demands of growing up, or trying to deal with personal, family or school problems that can seem overwhelming. When identified and treated early, a child's behavioral health issues can often be resolved.

Left untreated, however, behavioral and emotional problems can interfere with a child's ability to learn, damage self-esteem and negatively affect relationships at home, in school and the community.

Signs that a child might need help include:

  • Acting out at home or school
  • Difficulty handling routine activities and daily challenges
  • Frequent complaints about not feeling well
  • Changes in eating, sleeping habits or activity level
  • Persistent unhappiness, crying or whining
  • Frequent temper tantrums or outbursts
  • Sudden changes in school performance or behavior
  • Overactive for child's age
  • Tendency to defy authority
  • Difficulty getting along with others
  • Excessive anxiety and worrying
