Since 1938, the Milwaukee Center for Independence has been assisting individuals and families with special needs and barriers to achievement reach their highest levels of independence. Here are some quick facts about MCFI. 

MISSION

To assist individuals and families with special needs to better live and work in the community.

CAUSE

Since 1938, our goal has been dignity and independence for each person we serve. We believe that independence is the key to involvement in the community and that each individual can contribute to our society.

SIZE

MCFI has an annual budget of $56 million, with 525 employees. About 50 volunteers serve on our boards and committees, and about 350 other volunteers assist our work in various ways.

CLIENTS SERVED

  • We serve 5,000 persons in more than 50 hands-on services. They include newborns, working-age adults, persons with mental illness and the frail elderly. MCFI serves another 3,000 persons with financial services across the state. iCare serves nearly 20,000 Medicare and Medicaid members with coordinated medical and social services case management.
  • MCFI core programs serve clients with disabilities and other special needs as follows:

             - 66% physical/medical

            - 28% cognitive

           -  5% mental illness

          -   1% other

  • Client demographics:

             - 58% women

            -  60% minority

           -  51% are age 60 or older; 20% ages 40-59; 17% ages 20-39; 4% ages 4-19; and 8% ages birth to 3

NATIONAL RECOGNITION

CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) has given MCFI core programs its highest certification. CARF surveyors said MCFI has a "culture of innovation and enthusiasm that is unmatched in the industry." MCFI Pediatric Special Care is accredited by the Joint Commission (JCAHO).
